What are the Wrinkles

WRINKLES ARE PART OF THE AGEING PROCESS AND ARE OF TWO TYPES:

1. Dynamic wrinkles or muscle wrinkles are those that appear temporarily when you contract muscles during a facial expression, like ‘frown lines’ or ‘worry lines’ on the forehead, lines between the eyebrows, and ‘crow’s feet’ around the eyes.

Botulinum Toxin injections are used to relax these underlying muscles that cause the wrinkling of skin.

2. Static wrinkles that occur due to loss of collagen beneath the skin’s surface, like the ‘smile lines’ around the outer edges of the mouth, the crease that stretches from the edge of the nose to the corner of the mouth, ‘hollows’ under the eyes, in the chin, cheek or the lip. These are noticeable even when you are not moving your face and are better dealt with the use of fillers such as Juvederm that ‘fill’ the creases and add volume to the face.

Wrinkles can also be accredited to sun damage, effects of gravity and muscle contraction resulting from facial expressions such as frowning and laughing.

Wrinkles due to the effect of gravity represent natural sagging of tissue with age, and are generally only improved by surgical tightening procedures.

What is Botox

Botox is the trade name for highly purified Botulinum toxin Type A, produces by a bacteria called Clostridium botulinum. Several types of toxins have been identified, however type A is the most potent and has been in therapeutic use by doctors since the 1960s

HOW DOES IT ACT?

When injected into muscles, the botulinum toxin has a local effect. It acts by blocking the transmission of electrical impulses between the nerve endings and the muscle fibers around the injection site to cause weakness of the nearby muscle. This result in partial muscle paralysis that is temporary, as the new growth of nerves will re-innervate the muscles, and there is no difference in the expressiveness of the face during the period of action. Dynamic wrinkles as crow´s feet, frown lines and forehead wrinkles are due to repetitive facial expression, Weakening the muscles responsible for these facial expressions with Botox can dramatically improve these wrinkles.

SHOULD YOU GO FOR BOTULINUM TOXIN?

Of course, if you are conscious about improving your look and want to appear younger. Botulinum Toxin has been use to treat adults of all ages, and the results have been excellent, especially in those with minimal signs of ageing.

HOW IS IT DONE?

The procedure of injecting Botulinum Toxin is done in the office, it is directly injected into the specific muscles that cause the wrinkles, using a ultra fine needle. Several injections are usually needed at specific sites, depending on the area treated. Localized minor discomfort when receiving the injection and bruises can occur.

Areas most amenable to botulinum toxin are the forehead, frown lines between the eyebrows, crow’s feet, upper lip, and neck. Some also benefit from injection in the mari- onette lines. The lower lip is not injected with botulinum toxin, as this might result in drooling. The cheeks are not injected either, as this would prevent the ability to smile.

The Recovery

There is no downtime and recovery is instant. You will hold and ice pack against the treated area for a few minutes to minimize bruising and discomfort apart to keep the Botulinum Toxin in the desired area. Normal activities can be resumed immediately. It’s recommended that you don’t bend or lie down for a couple of hours after the injections so the Botulinum Toxin attaches to the specific nerve-muscle connection. Do not rub the area. Sometimes the patient may need touch up injection 2 weeks after during the follow up visit.

HOW LONG WILL THE BOTOX TREATMENT LAST?

Botulinum Toxin usually starts showing its effect 36 to 72 hours after injection and continue to see improvement for one to two weeks. its maximum effect generally last for six to eight months. It gives the face a more relaxed and smoother appearance even after 9 to 12 months. As the toxin wears off, your wrinkles will gradually return, but they wont be any worse that before the treatment. When a gradual fading of effects is noticed, you can return to our office to have another treatment.

HOW OFTEN CAN BOTOX INJECTIONS BE GIVEN?

You can receive Botulinum Toxin every 4 to 6 months. With repeated injections, the effects tend to last longer. Some evidence even suggests that after prolonged treatment, the affected muscles may become permanently weakened; so fewer treatments will be needed.

IS THE PROCEDURE SAFE?
  • No severe complications have ever been documented with the cosmetic use of Botulinum Toxin, which has thus been proven to be safe and effective
  • Bruising and some facial pain can occur after the injections
  • Very rarely, excessive weakening of the muscles and paresis of adjacent muscles can occur. This is self-limiting. It is therefore necessary to take Botulinum Toxin from a trained plastic surgeon.
  • Other side effects, though very rare, include headache, temporary eyelid droop, nausea, double vision, redness at the injection site.
CAN BOTOX BE COMBINED WITH OTHER TREATMENTS?

Botulinum Toxin works especially well when combined with other non-surgical treatments such as derma-fillers.

Facial dermal fillers are a little more painful and may require a topical local anesthetic cream. Millions of people using Botox and Fillers have found them to be safe, and non-invasive methods for looking younger and better.

DO NOT GET BOTOX IF YOU:
  • Have an infection where Botox will be injected
  • Have any disorders that affect your nerves and muscles like neurological disorders
  • Are pregnant or think you may be pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding
  • Are on medication – there also a number of medicines including some antibiotics or the ones like quinidine that may interact with Botulinum Toxin. So is important to tell us if you are taking any medication.
